What to Wear & Bring on a Desert Safari
A desert safari is easy and fun, but a few smart choices make it much more comfortable. Here is our checklist, based on thousands of rides out of Hurghada.
Clothing
- Light, long sleeves and trousers. They protect from sun and sand better than shorts and a tank top.
- Closed shoes. Trainers are perfect. Flip-flops slip off and let hot sand in.
- Clothes you don't mind getting dusty. Light colours hide sand best.
- A warm layer for the evening. From November to March the desert can feel cold after sunset — essential for the Mega Safari and other dinner programmes.
What we provide
On quad and buggy programmes we give you a helmet, a scarf to wrap Bedouin-style around face and neck, and goggles. Hotel pick-up, water and tea at the village are included too — see each programme's "Included" list, for example on the Quad 3 Hours.
What to bring
- Sunglasses and high-factor sunscreen
- A small bottle of water
- Some cash for tips, photos and souvenirs
- Phone in a zip bag or pocket that closes
- Lip balm — the desert air is very dry
What to leave at the hotel
- Expensive jewellery
- Large bags — there is no space on a quad
- Contact lenses if you can avoid them (sand + lenses = no fun)
Health and safety
Quad and buggy rides are bumpy. They are not recommended during pregnancy or for anyone with back or neck problems — choose the Jeep Safari instead. Listen to the briefing, keep a safe distance from the rider in front and follow the guide's line. If unsure which vehicle suits you, read Quad, Buggy or Jeep?
